Joining the team as a visiting PhD student to the University of Gothenburg, Walter Rosa, from the Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brazil is working hard on assembling and annotating the Attalea cohune genome. We have great long-read data and will use the annotation to find genes relevant for oil quantity and quality and assess it across individuals collected in the Bladen. We also aim to cross the genomic diversity of the species and these oil-related genes to data from the LIDAR to examine spatial and ecological drivers of variation.
